BEYOND THE VIEW

(NEW) PERSPECTIVES ON SEASIDE PHOTOGRAPHY

July 10 – 11, 2014

Canterbury Christ Church University

“In the United Kingdom, one is never more than seventy-five miles away from the coast. With this much shoreline, it’s not surprising that there is a strong British tradition of photography by the seaside. American photographers may have given birth to Street photography; but in the UK, we have the beach. Perhaps the natural outcome is Beach Photography.”

(Martin Parr: 2013)

This forthcoming conference explores seaside photography in its very broadest sense and provides an exciting critical space for debate and enquiry: the seaside as boundary between different environments; its location in contemporary photographic practice; seaside photography in an historical context, including class, gender issues and youth; the vernacular; the demotic; regeneration and the rise of leisure as captured in seaside imagery etc.

Keynote speakers at the conference include:

MARTIN PARR (Magnum Photographer);

BRIGITTE LARDINOIS (Deputy Director of the Photography and the Archive Research Centre at the University of the Arts in London)

AUDREY LINKMAN (author of The Victorians Photographic Portraits and the recently highly acclaimed Photography and Death).

The Conference responder is Professor VAL WILLIAMS (Director of the Photography and the Archive Research Centre at the University of the Arts in London).

The conference also includes an evening reception at the Sidney Cooper Gallery, Canterbury on 10th July as part of the associated Heritage Lottery Funded photographic exhibition: Beyond the View – Reframing the Sunbeam Photographic Collection and the launch of the associated publication.

Day 1 of the conference takes place at Canterbury Christ Church University’s, Sidney Cooper Gallery in Canterbury, Kent, UK on 10 July 2014

and

Day 2 at the Turner Contemporary Gallery in Margate, Kent, UK on 11 July 2014.
